The Lovers in tarot:
more than attraction, it's also a choice

The Lovers from the Rider-Waite tarot: a man and a woman standing beneath an angel
The Lovers from the Rider-Waite tarot (1909)

When people draw The Lovers, many first think of romance. It does often appear in love questions, but the card is often also about choice.

Look at the picture first

On the Rider-Waite Lovers, a man and a woman stand beneath an angel. Behind the woman is a tree with a serpent wrapped around it; behind the man, a tree burning with flames. The angel spreads its arms, with the sun shining above.

The two look at each other, and also seem to be facing the same decision. The card is often used to talk about relationships, and just as often about "what do you really value?"

Upright

In love, it can speak of mutual attraction, wanting to get closer, or a relationship reaching a step that needs confirming. At work, it often speaks of partnership, finding a direction you believe in, or a choice to be made according to your own values.

Reversed

Often about things not lining up: what's said differs from what's felt, or two people want things that don't match. It can also be putting off a choice you don't want to make.

In love questions

If you draw The Lovers when asking "Will they be with me?", don't rush to read it as a yes. Look at its position: in "the present", it may mean you really are drawn to each other; in "what needs facing", it may be reminding you there's a choice you haven't made yet.

In work questions

If you draw The Lovers while thinking about changing jobs or taking on a partnership, ask yourself: does this choice fit what I care about? Apart from the salary, what matters to me?

What to ask yourself when you draw it

  • What choice am I facing right now?
  • What do I really care about here?
  • If I could only choose one, what would it be, and why?

Common questions

Does The Lovers mean we'll be together?
Not necessarily. It often speaks of attraction and choice; it depends on the position and the question. A card can't replace the other person's decision.
Does The Lovers reversed mean a breakup?
You can't read it that directly. Reversed, it often speaks of things not lining up, or putting off a choice; it can also be a reminder for both of you to say clearly what you think first.
